OLD WAYS
Why is manual work difficult to measure?
People adapt to missing material, product variation, quality concerns and unexpected interruptions. That flexibility is why human work remains essential, and why one average cycle time cannot explain it.
Research on manual-production data acquisition finds that human-led operations often lack continuous process data and short feedback loops. Newer machine-vision research shows that manual operations can be measured in real time without wearables.
What is the equivalent of OEE for manual work?
There is no single universal “human OEE.” A useful model asks whether the process was ready, whether work flowed, whether the sequence was followed correctly and whether an improvement was sustained.
THE SOLUTION
Measure the process, not the person
Manual process monitoring should not become a digital stopwatch pointed at individuals. The useful unit is the workstation, operation, line, shift or process condition.
Systems should minimize personal data, restrict access, define retention clearly and avoid facial recognition or worker ranking. The question is not “Who was slow?” It is “What prevented this process from performing as designed?”
The connected factory needs both kinds of data
NIST describes smart manufacturing as connecting data from people, processes and things. Machine data explains what equipment did. Manual-process data explains what happened between machines and in the operations machines do not perform.
RESULTS
Frequently asked questions
Can OEE be used for manual processes?
Its discipline is useful, but a direct copy misses walking, waiting, sequence variation, material availability and handoffs.
Does manual process monitoring measure workers?
It should not. A responsible system measures process performance at the workstation, operation, line or shift level.
How can manufacturers collect the data?
Options include digital work instructions, connected tools, sensors, event inputs and privacy-conscious computer vision.
